 What is the Liberal Government?

The Liberal government was sworn in on January 23, 2017. Justin Trudeau, the new Prime Minister, is a member of the Liberal Party, which ruled Canada for almost sixty years before being ousted by Stephen Harper’s Conservatives in 2015.

The Liberals are a middle-of-the-road party that generally favors social liberalism over economic liberalism.

Trudeau campaigned on a platform of change, and his first order of business was to repeal Harper’s controversial anti-terrorism legislation, Bill C-51. He has since announced plans to legalize marijuana and end Canada’s combat mission in Afghanistan.

Trudeau also plans to invest in infrastructure, including a $50 billion stimulus package and $10 billion for green infrastructure projects.
